During midterms and finals week this room is packed to get into… I am still not sure if it is the quality of the study space or the essence of being in Hogwarts for a couple of hours.Penn State University Libraries’ newest space, a four-story expansion and ground-floor renovation known as the Collaboration Commons and Central Atrium, opened Thursday afternoon (Aug. This room is perfect to do some studying in or to lay down for a nap (more often then not, its a good place to nap). The Penn State University Park Library’s Paterno Humanities Reading Room has been nicknamed the “Harry Potter” room because of its old school feel with rows of desks and overhead lights. Needless to say, unless I am looking for an exact title, I will not be wandering about the Stacks in my free time. ![]() During my entire 20 minute stroll through the Stacks (levels 1-3) I encountered 3 people, all of which were studying in small, wooden cubicles. As each row lights up, one by one, you cannot help but to feel like your soul is about to be sucked out by a Dementor because you are not supposed to be in that area. The Stacks levels are not frequently used, so to save energy and money the library has the Stacks on a motion sensor that activates the overhead lights. Navigating through the stacks requires patience and usually a librarian’s help. The center of the building isseparated into a multilevel maze of reference books, textbooks, and scholarly journals. The equivalent to the restricted section of the Penn State Library would be the Central Stacks. Harry often sneaks into the Restricted section to review information with his Invisibility cloak, which is prohibited. After Tom Marvolo Riddle (Voldemort as a student) was able to access information about horcruxes that made him split his soul into seven pieces, Dumbledore tightened his grip about who and what material was allowed in the Restricted section. The Restricted section consists of books that require professor approval and permission to be accessed. Each of these sections house a special librarian staff, desks, and rows of bookshelves. These sections are then further split up by the Dewey Decimal system, which arranges the books alphabetically by author. The Penn State University Park library is split into fourteen sections, ranging from the Earth and Mineral Sciences Library to the Donald W. The Hogwarts library is split into sections about Invisibility, Dragons, Legality, and Reference. Hogwarts students and Penn State students a like have access to the floors of the libraries and can check out books with permission of the librarian. ![]() In Hogwarts, the library is not a separate entity from the castle rather, it is located on the third and fourth floors which are accessible by moving staircases. After climbing up concrete steps and pushing my way through the revolving doors I was welcomed into an open floor plan into a spacious information area. ![]() In order to write this blog post I had to venture into the uncharted area…. At Penn State, with so many online resources available, I rarely make it to the library when conducting formal research for reports. Libraries are nowadays foreign places to students.
